Ultrasonic Testing

Ultrasonic technology picks up sound waves generated through vibration in a median (gas, solid or liquid). Ultrasound (over 20 KHz) is the sound frequency level above the acoustic range of normal human hearing (20 Hz – 20 KHz). Ultrasonic analysis detects these frequencies, which are often directional and close to the source. With the ability to “hear” high frequencies, reliability engineers can document leaks in compressed gas systems, steam traps, valves and pumps. Electrical faults such as corona, tracking and arcing can also be detected with this technology.

When it comes to predictive maintenance, ultrasonic analysis is a versatile tool for leak detection, mechanical analysis and electrical inspections. It will also complement a vibration analysis program by aiding early detection of bearing failure and ensuring proper lubrication.

Using ultrasonic leak detection on a typical compressed air system can reduce energy costs by 20% -30%. Taking into account rising fuel costs, it is easy to see how a steam inspection program can offer immediate cost benefits, in addition to optimized system performance.
